Event Description: This symposium is a review and update on current hot topics in primary care medicine. It is intended for family physicians, internists and general practitioners including physician assistants. Participants have the opportunity to actively participate in the sessions and also network with colleagues.
Objectives
Manage pain with both medication and other alternative methods
Prevent and manage type two diabetes (through exercise and newer medications)
Summarize recent updated guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia.
Identify various polyarthritis work-ups
Discuss benefits of acceptable documentation and the dangers of inadequate charting.
Identify the process of de-prescribing and some practical strategies for implementing it in the clinical setting
Identify both medicated assisted and non-medicated assisted strategies for treating insomnia and other sleep disturbances.
Appropriately screen patients for hepatitis C and correctly interpret the results
Identify treatment options for hepatitis C
Identify common causes of drug-induced liver injury and resources for stratifying risk
Determine a testing strategy for elevated liver enzymes based on presentation
Clarify the appropriate diagnostic strategies for
evaluating abnormal uterine bleeding.
Formulate a treatment plan for women with
abnormal uterine bleeding including dysfunctional
uterine bleeding
Identify and mange patients with osteoporosis
Learn the criteria and rationale for using anti-obesity pharmacotherapy
Identify the 3 most common types of bariatric surgery and emphasize importance of the primary care practitioner in long term management.
Understand the typical weight loss patterns after surgery and how to approach patients at high risk or currently experiencing weight regain/ disease relapse
Review the clinical profiles that comprise concussion
Identify treatment options for different concussion clinical profiles
Identify common symptoms of knee osteoarthritis
Identify nonsurgical treatment options for knee osteoarthritis
Learn how to safely address weight with children, adolescents, and parents, including: appropriate language and preferred terminology
Learn techniques for meal planning with patients and families
