Event Description: This advanced continuing education training examines evidence-based and evidence-informed practices for professionals currently providing Batterer Intervention Program (BIP) and Domestic Violence Intervention (DVI) services. The training focuses on the intersection of trauma-informed practice, accountability, and behavior change, with particular attention to the distinction between understanding factors that contribute to abusive behavior and inadvertently using those factors to excuse, minimize, or justify abuse.
Participants will examine current research regarding BIP/DVI effectiveness, limitations, and emerging approaches, as well as practical implications for intervention with individuals presenting with trauma histories, mental health concerns, substance use, defensiveness, minimization, victim blaming, and externalization of responsibility. Emphasis will be placed on maintaining a trauma-informed approach while promoting meaningful accountability, recognizing patterns of coercive and controlling behavior, and evaluating progress through behavioral indicators rather than program attendance or verbal compliance alone. Case examples and applied strategies will be used to help experienced providers translate the evidence base into day-to-day BIP/DVI practice.
