Target Audience
Spanish-English bilingual individuals. Spanish proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking is required because this class is taught in Spanish.
Event Description
This level has self-paced modules, followed by a short Zoom meeting with the group and instructor. You will have access to the modules one week before the Zoom meeting with the instructor. The modules are required to be completed before the Zoom meetings. Note: If you do not complete the modules and attend the Zoom meeting, you will not be able to attend future levels. Prerequisite: Must be Spanish-English Fluent Registration Deadline: May 13 Access to Course Modules: May 13 Live Webinar: May 20 The goal of Level 3 is to improve knowledge of health care and medical terminology in English and Spanish. Both formal and informal terminology will be reviewed, including pronunciation and definition of terms. Participants will complete their plan of study by learning and reviewing terminology grouped by systems of the body and creating scenarios for role plays, thereby contextualizing the terms in realistic situations. Participants will be exposed to high register and colloquial terminology; proper positioning when interpreting in person; interpreter modes; Hispanic traditional healing terminology; sight translation; and introduced to Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Objectives
- Cite major organs in the body, their function and their names in English and Spanish.
- Articulate some of the most common illnesses of the major organs of the body in English and Spanish.
- Identify common prefixes and suffixes in medical terminology in English and Spanish.
- Demonstrate improved comprehension of material by at least 25% improvement between pre-assessment and post-assessment scores.
- Complete plan of study to improve and maintain skills and to meet the requirements of certification in professional medical interpretation.
