Target Audience

Foreign-language interpreters in health & human services; Interpreter Administrators; Experienced Interpreters who wish to revisit ethics and standards of practice, sight translation and simultaneous interpretation.

Event Description

This level has self-paced modules, followed by a short Zoom meeting with the group and instructor. You will have access to the modules one week before the Zoom meeting with the instructor. The modules are required to be completed before the Zoom meetings. Note: If you do not complete the modules and attend the Zoom meeting, you will not be able to attend future levels. Prerequisite: Level 1, Level 2 Registration Deadline: May 20 Access to Course Modules: May 20 Live Webinar: May 27 This course provides an intense examination of foreign language interpreter ethics and national standards of practice. Principles and ethical standards from the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC), the National Board of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA), and the California Healthcare Interpreter Association (CHIA) are examined, compared, and contrasted.

Objectives

  1. Compare the NCIHC’s 9 principles and relate them to the National Board’s Code of Ethics and to the CHIA’s Standards for Healthcare Interpreters Ethical Principles, Protocols, and Guidance on Roles & Intervention.
  2. List best procedures regarding sight translation.
  3. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of simultaneous interpretation.
