Event Description

The Neuromuscular Ultrasound course focuses on applications in muscle disease, peripheral and cranial nerve imaging, and an introduction to the use of ultrasound in evaluating musculoskeletal disorders. Lectures are integrated with hands-on demonstrations of technique and case interpretation. A small group format facilitates questions and answers and tailors the educational experience to meet the specific needs of individual participants. It is in real-time use of the instrument that the practitioner recognizes the importance of this type of basic knowledge and it is in this context that they can apply this knowledge to troubleshoot difficult imaging cases, identify artifacts, and improve resolution at the bedside. NOTE: For questions regarding the course curriculum, please contact the Center for Experiential and Applied Learning directly via email: cealultrasound@wakehealth.edu Registration for this course closes Tuesday, 4/28/2026, at noon. Cancellations received at least two weeks (14 business days) before the activity will receive a 100% refund. Registrants cancelling between two weeks and two full business days prior to the first day of the event will be refunded at 70% of the registration fee and are subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee. The registration fee will not be refunded if a cancellation is received less than two days before the activity. Cancellations must be in writing (fax, email or mail). Registrants may send a substitute in their place to avoid cancellation fees.

Objectives

  1. Define terms of ultrasound and demonstrate application of the principles while imaging neuromuscular structures.
  2. Identify upper extremity, lower extremity and cranial musculature and the visible boundaries that distinguish muscle groups in these areas.
  3. Recognize loss of heterogeneity, fasciculations, hyperechoic changes, hypertrophy and other common pathologic changes in affected human muscles.
  4. Identify the median, radial and ulnar nerves in the upper extremity and areas of the sural, peroneal and tibial nerves in the lower extremity and recognize common anatomic variants and pathologic abnormalities of these nerves.
  5. Discuss indications for appropriate use of ultrasound imaging, factors that could complicate interpretation and clinical situations where ultrasound imaging is particularly contributory to addressing clinical problems.

Session Credits

Credit will be awarded based on participant selection at time of registration. Before selecting credits, participants are encouraged to review our Credit Glossary (opens in new tab) for general information. Please note that not all credit types are available for every program.
