Objectives
- Develop a management plan for imaging and follow-up of infants with prenatally detected urinary tract dilation.
- Explain why a postnatal kidney ultrasound performed before 72 hours of life may provide a falsely reassuring result and fail to detect pathological conditions.
- Identify the history, laboratory tests, and imaging studies required to monitor children with solitary, horseshoe, or pelvic kidneys.
- Summarize sports participation recommendations for children with a single kidney and compare them to guidance for children with other single organs.
- Recognize clinical signs suggestive of primary immunodeficiency in children.
- Develop a basic immunology workup for a child suspected of having immunodeficiency.
- Explain the significance of abnormal newborn screening results for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) in North Carolina.
- Identify clinical scenarios where estrogen-containing hormonal medications are contraindicated.
- Explain risk stratification categories for hormonal medication use.
- Select safe and effective alternatives to estrogen-containing hormonal medications.
- Describe indications for initiating airway clearance device technology and the role of pulmonary function testing.
- Compare the features and functions of commonly used airway clearance devices.
- Summarize the natural history of tic disorders in children.
- Identify the differential diagnosis of tics in pediatric patients.
- Describe an effective diagnostic approach for tic disorders.
- Outline evidence-based treatment strategies and key considerations for managing tic disorders.
- Recognize common complications associated with tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube care, including early warning signs and referral criteria.
- Differentiate between urgent and non-urgent scenarios requiring specialist input or emergency evaluation.

- Describe the spectrum of orthostatic intolerance (OI) disorders, including postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
- Review treatment options to improve symptoms of OI.
- Provide a framework for when to refer patients to Cardiology or other specialists.
- Define vaccine hesitancy and explain its complexities.
- Summarize recent policy changes related to vaccines.
- Discuss current epidemiology for select vaccine-preventable diseases.
- Explain the evidence informing vaccine mandates.
- Identify evidence-based community interventions to promote vaccine uptake.
- Describe effective communication strategies for discussing vaccines with patients.
- Identify risk factors for cerebral palsy.
- Differentiate conditions that meet criteria for cerebral palsy from those that do not.
- Determine appropriate timing for referral to therapies or further evaluation.
- Explain the etiologies and classification of common childhood anemias.
- Describe the diagnosis and management of iron deficiency anemia.
- Summarize the etiologies and management strategies for thrombocytopenia and neutropenia.
- Define essential terms related to gender identity development and distinguish between gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender expression.
- Discuss normal variations in gender identity development among children and adolescents.
- Explain the increased risk of abuse among gender-diverse youth and its contributing factors.
- Identify strategies for creating a psychologically safe clinical environment, including affirming language and inclusive practices.
- Outline best practices for screening, documentation, and intervention to support gender-diverse patients while minimizing stress.
