Event Description: The Winston-Salem Dance Medicine Conference (WiSDM) is a multi-disciplinary educational opportunity for physicians, allied health professionals, dancers, dance instructors, and students to review (or learn anew) the fundamentals of dance medicine, including unique biomechanics, genre-specific considerations, and social/psychological demands that may influence performance and injury risk. The conference provides both instructional and networking opportunities in order to create an environment conducive to adult learning.

Objectives
Increase vocabulary for dance terminology and how this will be used during a physical history.
Analyze dance biomechanics and how they influence a physical examination.
Identify different genres of dance including the different demands they place on a dancer’s body and how this can affect injury patterns.
Using enhanced understanding of biomechanics and genre-specific demands, conduct a more focused physical history and improve the sensitivity/specificity of the physical examination for dance-related injury.
Apply a standardized approach to pointe shoe fitting to facilitate discussions about appropriate modification of an off-the-shelf shoe to maximize performance and account for injury or biomechanical challenges.
Enhance communication between dancer and dance instruction to improve performance and safety.
Create and foster multidisciplinary teams for the sustainable practice of dance medicine.
Incorporate communication strategies with dance professionals, artistic directors, and dance instructors to create a community asset for dancers.
Audience
Physicians (including residents/fellows), physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, athletic trainers, dietitians, dance/technique faculty, dance students and community members interested/invested in the performing arts.
