Event Description: This year's Addiction Research & Clinical Health Symposium aims to identify, discuss, and review information and strategies that promote evidence-based integrated addiction services. The emphasis of the Symposium is on social-justice and equity-based addiction services across the care spectrum.

Jointly sponsored by Wake Forest University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Wake Forest Baptist Health, and Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC), a program of Wake Forest School of Medicine and part of the NC AHEC System

Objectives

Discuss current epidemiology of the drug overdose crisis.

Identify the social and political factors that contribute to the existence and propagation of opioid use and other substance use in racial and ethnic minority communities and the associated risks therein.

Review how racism impacts drug policy and access to effective treatment.

Discuss tools that can improve health outcomes for racial and ethnic minorities with substance use disorders, including non-traditional research modalities, which may be more culturally acceptable for this population.

Recommend policy, program, and practice solutions including de-stigmatization and harm reduction to address equity and overdose.

Describe new research on the diagnosis and treatment of sexually compulsive and addictive behavior.

Analyze the ethical issues about the utility and appropriateness of incentive based Contingency Management.

Name two medications with evidence for efficacy in the treatment of methamphetamine use disorder.

Identify the therapeutic mechanisms and evaluate the efficacy of Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE) for reducing opioid misuse, craving, and pain.

Apply the core communication skills of Motivational Interviewing for addiction treatment.

Explain how syndemics theory can be applied to generate HIV and substance use intervention targets.

Identify key aspects that shape the legal cannabis market in the U.S. and how this could impact the community, particularly minorities.

Discuss three components of trauma-informed supervision practice and how to apply those components with co-occurring issues.

Describe best practices for treatment of substance use disorders among women involved in the criminal justice system.
