Event Description: Get the latest updates on hospital medicine that will enhance your daily practice. This 2-day conference is built to maximize your learning of evidence-based medicine by covering a wide range of inpatient medicine topics led by expert faculty. Enhance your ultrasound technique with an optional pre-course point-of-care ultrasound. Enjoy all this at our annual beachside learning weekend with other physicians, APPs, residents, and students!

Objectives

Identify conditions that absolutely require initiation of IV antibiotics or conversely, conditions that no longer absolute require IV abx and may be treated with PO.

Review latest evidence on using PO antibiotics for osteomyelitis, bacteremia, endocarditis, and other conditions.

Discuss updates in regimens and duration for continued IV antibiotics after hospital discharge.

Discuss balancing length of stay, readmission rates, and quality patient care.

Recognize the most common reasons for hospital readmission.

Identify strategies for avoiding readmission where possible.

Explain how implementing Hospitalist @ Home has affected length of stay and readmission rates.

Interpret an ABG quickly and accurately.

Identify common causes and recommend initial treatments for respiratory acidosis, respiratory.

Determine when a VBG can be used in place of an ABG versus when an ABG is necessary.

Identify common findings that are missed by generalists but warrant inpatient cardiology consult: Pulmonary hypertension, Valvular stenosis, Atrium dilation, Hypertrophy, Hyper-mobility (septum).

Diagnose and manage common causes of anemia in the inpatient setting.

Formulate an initial approach to thrombocytopenia.

Interpret DIC panels, HIT and identify when to consult hematology.

Distinguish when IV vs PO iron repletion is appropriate.

Formulate a comprehensive pain management regimen for chronic and acute pain in inpatient setting (use of non-opioids, adjunct agents, PT, interventions).

Identify common missteps/misconceptions in the management of inpatient acute/chronic pain.

Discuss when to prescribe buprenorphine on discharge (and who has authority).

Develop a plan to integrate palliative care principles while still pursuing disease-directed treatments.

Discuss strategies for difficult end of life conversations and when families/patients have unrealistic expectations.

Distinguish between inpatient hospice vs skilled nursing facility with hospice vs home with hospice and identify the optimal choice.

Recommend a plan for anticoagulants (warfarin vs DOACs) based on different indications such as Afib with Chads vasc 3 vs 8, h/o DVT/PE, h/o factor V Leiden.

Recognize and compare the different ASA classes.

Determine contraindications to urgent but non-emergency surgery.

Identify rashes that need a dermatology consult.

Determine when a lesion warrants a biopsy.

Describe a basic wound care regimen.
