What skills are required to lead an orchestra and how does a music director work with their musicians to create a beautiful performance experience for the audience? Wake Forest University's Tim Heath will lead participants in a “conducting 101” class where they will learn the essential skills of baton movement and identify exactly what physical gestures and comments elicit the desired musical responses from the musicians. He will share the secrets of great performances and identify how easily a conductor can disrupt the team of skilled musicians who have differing levels of anxiety about performing.
By participating in this arts-based course learners are expected to improve their communication, empathy, collaboration, and teamwork skills. They will develop a greater sense of cultural humility, enabling them to engage with patients and colleagues in ways that respect cultural, social, and individual differences. The goal of this Arts-Based course is to improve the quality of effective communication, empathy, and teamwork for physicians.
Dr. Timothy Heath is Associate Teaching Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Wake Forest University, where he leads the band program, teaches conducting and music literature, and inspires the next generation of musical leaders. He also serves as Music Director of the Triad Area Medical Orchestra and founder of NexTonal, a chamber winds ensemble known for innovative programming. An active guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Timothy has performed across the United States and Europe, uniting artistry, collaboration, and community through music.
